Resizing an image for website submission
03/03/08
Following a request from our Vice Chair on the subject of resizing an image please find an article below.
The most important criteria is file size. Our site host has a maximum file size of 160Kb per image.Any higher than this and I have to resize it.Not a big problem but if you can do it yourself it saves time all round plus you submit your image how you want it to appear.
To use my own camera as an example,I use the camera set on high quality JPEG at 6mp resolution.Using Photoshop CS3 see the example below, the technique will be similar for other versions of Photoshop eg CS2,CS,Elements or indeed other image editing software. The picture is a JPEG loaded straight off the memory card and onto the Photoshop Desktop.
Photoshop Desktop
This shows a typical example,an image open on the Photoshop desktop. To check the image size click on the toolbar "Image" and then scroll down to "Image Size".Click on this and the following dialogue box will appear.
Image Size Dialogue
From this you can see that the image size is 41.7 x 27.7 inches at 72ppi,miles too big for the screen and giving a file size of 3.05mb,too big to be uploaded to the site.We therefore need to resize the image. You could do this by changing the ppi to approx 300,this would bring the image size down but still give a large file. For printing this would be the chosen solution but for the screen its better to use the Pixel Dimensions boxes.
Pixel Dimensions Dialogue
Most monitors now,and indeed the website operate at a resolution of 1024 x 768 so these are the dimensions you need to aim for.It doesnt matter if these are slightly over as the site takes this into account. Here the image is 1155 x 768.The "Constrain Proportions" box,if checked, ensures the picture retains its same overall look. The final task is to save your image.
To do this from the Photoshop taskbar click "File",scroll down to "Save As" and click.A dialogue will open so click save, select your location to save and the following will appear
JPEG Options Dialogue
Adjust the slider "Image Options" to around 5 Medium and click "OK".This will then save the file out to wherever you specified and give you a file size in this case of 122kb,easily uploadable to the site. This can be used to resize almost any image but if you need any further guidance then please speak to me at any club meeting.
Have fun
